As a child growing up, I always thought about ordering this book, because it was offered as a small paperback booklet edition for only a quarter (and I quote): ". . . twenty-five cents in coin to cover cost, mailing, and handling. DO NOT SEND STAMPS." from HALSAM PRODUCTS CO., Box C, 4114 Ravenswood Ave., Chicago 13, ILL. This booklet offer was a small flyer enclosed with my brand new HALSAM Checkers Set purchased by my grandfather, circa 1952.

I regret not having ordered the full-blown edition of this fine book sooner.

1001 Commonly Misspelled Words: What Your Spell Checker Won't Tell You

The thing I really like about this book is the system it uses to help you find the correct spelling of lots and lots of words. Arranged alphabetically are all the possible phonetic ways different words could be spelled with the correct spelling next to it. The incorrect spellings are in one font and the correct spellings are in another. There are also numerous explanations of the words, including sources, usages, and so on. These are very entertaining to read. I highly recommend this book.

Blondie24: Playing at the Edge of AI

This is a well written and entertaining book about the author's quest to use neural networks to "teach" a computer how to play checkers. What makes the author's efforts unique is his steadfast refusal to use "human" knowledge in the design or development of the software. Instead his approach is to infuse the software with only the basic mechanics of the game. He then uses neural networks and pits various mutations against each other with only the strongest advancing to the next round. By mimicking the process of natural selection, the author is able to evolve a program that is able to play checkers at a surprisingly high level.
